How can we pay for ecosystem services in practice? A good practices workshop

The Catalan Innovation Action case study on forests and water featured as a good practice example of “Innovative financial and marketing mechanisms for payment for ecosystem services” in an International Training Workshop as part of EU Green Week 2021.

The workshop, organised by the PROGRESS-Interreg Europe Project was a third event showcasing and sharing good practices on ecosystem services from six EU territories, and took place online on 25 May 2021.

Participation to the workshop was targeted to policy and decision makers who can improve their practice with PROGRESS methodologies. The overarching theme of the workshop was the implementation of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES), a topic of increasing interest over the last decade.

The case studies presented in three topic panels on how PES are implemented in: Forests, Farmland and National Frameworks. The Catalan case study featured in the first panel, Valuing the positive impact of forestry in the provision of ES. The array of good practices showcased how these can be applied in other policy instruments across Europe.

Following the event, PROGRESS will produce a thematic handbook, Interreg Europe good practices and a policy brief, which will be available on the project website.
